Where do fish come from?

Most fish is still being caught at sea. These fish are called wild catch. However, an increasing part of fish is farmed fish, also called aquaculture. In Holland this is about 10%, worldwide about 40%

Anglers fish with a fishing-rod in a pond, a lake or in a river. Fishermen fish at sea or in lakes. Fishermen who fish at sea, often leave on Monday and return on Friday with a boat full of fish. Fresh water fishermen, who fish at lakes and rivers, fish for one day or a couple of hours a day.

Fishermen who fish at the North Sea have large fishing-boats. They have been built especially for the species of fish they intend to catch.

Fishing-boats that fish at the oceans are even bigger. They often stay at the ocean for months. These boats have a complete factory and enormous coldstores. The fish is processed and frozen directly after it’s been caught. This fish is called fresh frozen. Smaller ships with coldstore facilities collect the fish that are ready and take them ashore. The large ships stay at sea.
