A piece of history

Long time ago ... in 1950 locals living along the Mekong River banks started farming Pangasius (tra, basa). How did they farm fish at that time?

fish fries were caught in the wild. Pangasius since 1990 has been farmed mainly in floating cages in river, and on the decrease since 2000. These days this farming model has been rarely used and not popular due to high costs, potential risks and low output.

Also, fish farming model in net enclosures in alluvial grounds is not used widely due tot difficult to control environment. Pangasius started "changing its look" with research in induced spawning of Pangasius to ensure constant supplies of fries. The research started in 1970 with the cooperation between a French scientist, Philippe Cacote, and the University of Can Tho. But induced spawning did not applied widely until the 1990s. And since then the Pangasius aquaculture industry has undergone miraculous growth with more perfect technology and conditions of farming.

Farmed Pangasius at that time was mainly marketed and consumed in domestic market. Pangasius at that time was marketed modestly at one market corner, bought everyday by housewives in Vietnams countryside.
